This coming Sunday, June 29, our service includes the Sacrament of Baptism.

I hope to see you!

June 18, 2014

If you are able, please come and join us during the summer months. The 9:00 Sunday morning service is quiet and calm. Hope to see you!

June 11, 2014

This coming Sunday, June 15, is known as Trinity Sunday in the life of the church. We read the story about a wind from God sweeping over the face of the waters from the first chapter of the Book of Genesis.

This coming Sunday also happens to be Father’s Day. Rather than buy your Dad a new drill, or a new golf club, why not do something different and come to church with your Dad. Don't forget that the service is at 9:00.

Either way, I hope to see you!

June 4, 2014

This coming Sunday, June 8, is known as Pentecost Sunday.  It also happens to be Graduation Sunday at Port Washington High School.  We will take a few moments to recognize all of our high school graduates and ask them to say a few words about their plans for the year to come.

If you are able, please come and join us.  Please don’t forget that during the summer months we have one service at 9:00.

May 27, 2014

This coming Sunday, June 1, is known as Ascension Sunday.  It also happens to be Confirmation Sunday in the life of our church.  Twelve members of our 8th Grade Confirmation Class will confirm their faith and become full members of our church.  The service also includes the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

The following Sunday, June 8, is known as Pentecost Sunday.  It also happens to be Graduation Sunday at Port Washington High School.  We will take a few moments to recognize all of our high school graduates and ask them to say a few words about their plans for the year to come.

If you are able, please come and join us for both of these important celebrations.  Please don’t forget that during the summer months we have one service at 9:00.

As we come to the end of our church program year, we are celebrating two new initiatives in the life of our church that will continue through the summer months and into the fall.

As many of you may have heard, our Sustainability Committee recently announced the creation of a Celebration Wall in our Creekside Commons park space. The Celebration Wall was designed by Adam Brown, a member of our church, and will offer members and friends of the church, along with the larger community, an opportunity to honor, memorialize and celebrate friends and loved ones. Simply click here for more information.

I also wanted to let you know that our Church Council, along with our Common Ground Committee, has just begun a Relational Meetings Campaign. Over the course of the next year, they hope to visit with every member and friend of the church to learn more about who we are as a church and how we can better serve one another and the world around us.

You will no doubt hear more about both of these initiatives in the weeks to come, but please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Special thanks go out to everyone who assisted with our Holy Week services, our musicians, ushers, acolytes, and liturgists.  I thought that the entire week was a dramatic celebration of the story of our faith.

Special thanks go out to everyone who assisted with our Holy Week services, our musicians, ushers, acolytes, and liturgists.  I thought that the entire week was a dramatic celebration of the story of our faith.

Looking ahead to this coming weekend, let me remind you that our Sustainability Committee is hosting a Free Electronics Recycling Event this coming Saturday, April 26, in conjunction with the Spring Farmers Market.  They will be accepting virtually all electronic items in the church parking lot from 9:00 – 1:00.

This coming Sunday morning, April 27, the Senior Handbell Choir joins us at the 10:00 service, which also includes a Service of Baptism.  I hope you are able to join us as we continue our celebration of Easter.

April 10, 2014

This coming week is known as Holy Week in the life of the church, an ancient drama of love and life.

On Palm Sunday everyone receives palm branches as they enter the sanctuary and we lift them up with shouts of Hosanna!  The Carol and Chapel Choirs join the celebration at 10:00 along with the 8th grade Confirmation Class.  We will be serving hot cross buns following both services.

On Maundy Thursday we celebrate with a service of Holy Communion and Tenebrae. Tenebrae is a Latin word that means shadows. As we read the story of Jesus' last night together with his disciples, the sanctuary is filled with shadows, ending in almost total darkness. Special music will be provided by Mike Spalding, Tracy Greymont, Scott Oftedahl, and Barb Bahr.

On Good Friday we burn frankincense and myrrh as we listen to a reading of the Passion Story. Special music will be provided by Kathy Bretl.

On Easter Sunday morning, we celebrate Jesus' resurrection with three services at 6:00, 8:00 and 10:00. The 6:00 sunrise service includes the sacrament of Holy Communion. Our Senior Choir and Easter Brass join the celebration at both 8:00 and 10:00.

If you are able, please come join us!

April 2, 2014

This coming Sunday, April 6, is the fifth Sunday in the church season of Lent.  We will hear the story about Jesus and Lazarus from the 11th Chapter of the Gospel of John and celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion.  We will also host a Fellowship Hour following both services.

On Sunday afternoon, our Common Ground Committee invites you to help celebrate the extension of the Ozaukee County Shared-Ride Taxi Hours into Sunday afternoon and evening.  We will gather at 2:00 for an official ribbon cutting followed by cake and refreshments. (Click here for more information.)

I hope that you are able to join us for both celebrations.

March 27, 2014

There is a pretty good chance that this coming Sunday morning, March 30, it is actually going to feel spring-like here in Port Washington.  For the most part, the ground is still frozen solid so it’s definitely too early to work in the garden.  So, why not come to church!

The Senior Choir will be joining us at the 10:00 service and our Church School kids will be learning about and celebrating the Sacrament of Holy Communion.  It promises to be a wonderful morning for everyone.

Please come and join us!

March 19, 2014

This coming Sunday, March 23, marks the third Sunday in the church season of Lent.  We celebrate another Family Service at 10:00.  Our Church School children will be joining us for the entire service to learn a little bit more about the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion.  As part of the service, we will celebrate the baptism of Erik James Ternes.

Immediately following the 10:00 service, we have scheduled a Special Congregational Meeting to approve a final 2014 Church Budget.  Although we had a wonderful response to this year’s Stewardship Campaign, we ended up slightly short of our goal. In order to have a balanced budget for 2014, we need to vote on a number of revisions to the budget.  All members and friends of the church are encouraged to attend.

March 11, 2014

This past Sunday marked the first Sunday in the church season of Lent, forty days (not counting Sundays) that lead us to the celebration of Easter. Some of you may recall that the name of this season comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which refers to the lengthening of the days that lead us to springtime.

Traditionally, Lent has been a time for study, reflection and prayer, a time to wrestle with some of the deepest questions of life and faith.

Don Niederfrank, our new Minister of Visitation, is offering a Lenten Book Study each Wednesday evening during the season of Lent, (March 12, 19, 26, April 2, 9 and 16) at 7:00, in the church library. The title of the book is Living Faith While Holding Doubts written by Martin Copenhaver. Copies of the book are available in the church office for $12.

As another way of helping us with our Lenten journey, I am offering five simple services of Silent Reflection and Prayer, followed by the celebration of Holy Communion, each Thursday evening during the season of Lent, (March 13, 20, 27, April 3 and 10) at 6:00, in the church sanctuary.

This coming Sunday, March 9, marks the first Sunday in the church season of Lent, forty days (not counting Sundays) that lead us to the celebration of Easter. Some of you may recall that the name of this season comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which refers to the lengthening of the days that lead us to springtime.

February 26, 2014

This coming Sunday, March 2, is known as Transfiguration Sunday in the life of the church, the last Sunday in the church season of Epiphany.

We always read the story about Jesus’ transfiguration on the mountaintop.  This year the story is taken from the 17th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew.  We also celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion at both services.

Next week we begin the church season of Lent. We celebrate Fat Tuesday with a Pancake Dinner in Fellowship Hall and we celebrate Ash Wednesday with an evening service.

I hope you are able to join us!

February 19, 2014

The coming Sunday, February 23, Rev. Craig Modahl, our Specialized Minister, will lead our services.  We celebrate another Family Service at 10:00.  The Carol and Chapel Choirs will sing and the 8th Grade Confirmation Class will assist Craig in leading the service.  Craig will also offer a special Children’s Meditation about the Lord’s Prayer.

February 12, 2014

We are going to mix things up a bit as we come to the end of the church season of Epiphany.

This coming Sunday, February 16, Rev. Don Niederfrank, our new Minister of Visitation, will lead our services.  Don has the “pleasure” of speaking about one of the most challenging passages in the Gospel of Matthew, Matthew 5:21-37.  The Senior Handbell Choir will provide special music at the 10:00 service.

The following Sunday, February 23, Rev.

Please give both Don and Craig a hearty welcome!

January 29, 2014

This coming Sunday morning, February 2, we celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion at both services.  Don Niederfrank, our new Minister of Visitation, will be assisting me at the 10:00 service, and Kai-i Tien will be joining us at the piano as the newest member of our music staff.

In other news, many of you have heard that the two boilers that heat our sanctuary and narthex have failed and need to be replaced.  The smaller of the two is still limping along, so at least we have not been freezing!

This past Sunday morning, as part of our annual Winter Congregational Meeting, the congregation voted to withdraw funds from our Endowment Fund to help pay for two new boilers.  The good news is that they should be installed sometime in the next couple of weeks.

January 22, 2014

This coming Sunday, January 26, we celebrate another Family Service at 10:00.  The Carol and Chapel Choirs will sing and our 8th Grade Confirmation Class will assist me in leading the service.

Our annual Winter Congregational Meeting is scheduled for immediately following the 10:00 service.  Our two main items of business are an end-of-the-year financial report and the approval of our 2014 Church Budget.  We will also be voting to remove funds from our Endowment Fund to help pay for the purchase of two new boilers to heat the sanctuary and narthex.

Most importantly, please don’t forget that this is the final week to complete our annual Stewardship Campaign.  If you have not yet made a pledge to support the church financially in 2014, we really need to hear from you.  The only way we can sustain the services and programs of our church is with everyone’s support.  In other words, we can’t do it without you!  Please return your pledge card by Sunday morning.

January 15, 2014

As we begin a new year, we have the pleasure of welcoming three new people to our church staff.

Pru Palecek and Kai-i Tien will be joining us as pianists, filling the position vacated by Robin Honish.  Both Pru and Kai-i play beautifully, although they have very different styles.  They will generally play on the first and third Sundays of each month.

We also have the pleasure of welcoming Holly Ternes as our new Church School Director.  As you may have heard, Missy Vierling and her family will be moving to Appleton as soon as they can sell their house here in Port Washington.  We are saddened that the Vierling Family will be leaving us, but thrilled that Holly is able to assume this role.  Holly, and her husband Jeff, have three children and have been actively involved in our church, and our Church School program, for many years.

In other news, let me remind you that we are now in the process of completing our annual Stewardship Campaign.  If you have not yet made a pledge to support the church financially in 2014, we really need to hear from you.  The only way we can sustain the services and programs of our church is with everyone’s support.  In other words, we can’t do it without you!  Please return your pledge card as soon as possible.
